local

Your city, actually.

A mobile discovery app where every listing is independently owned. No chains. No franchises. Just the places that make a city worth living in.

The problem

Every discovery app surfaces the same places.

Google Maps shows you what's nearby. Yelp shows you what's popular. But neither was built to help you find the coffee shop that's been on that corner for 15 years, or the bookstore run by someone who actually reads. The independent business sector — the businesses that make neighborhoods worth living in — is systematically underserved by existing discovery tools. local• is built for them.

The product

Discovery built around independent businesses, and nothing else.

local• is a mobile-first discovery platform where every listing is independently owned. No chains. No franchises. No ambiguity. The app uses location-based discovery, short-form video, editorial curation, and a standardized 10-point rating system to help users find great local spots — and help those businesses get discovered.

Location feed
Neighborhood-level discovery with filters, tags, and distance-sorted results.
Short-form video
TikTok/Reels-style content from customers and business owners alike.
Verified reviews
Up/downvote moderation and verified visit badges keep signal high.
Attribute tags
Searchable tags like “nut-free kitchen,” “pets welcome,” and “woman-owned.”
local• picks
Editorial cards from the local• team — distinct from user reviews, always clearly labeled.
10-point ratings
A single, consistent rating scale across all businesses on the platform.
Why it's different

The premise is the filter.

On Yelp or Google Maps, you're searching across millions of businesses and hoping to find the good ones. On local•, every single business is independently owned — that constraint is the product. It means users can browse without skepticism, and businesses don't compete against Starbucks for visibility.

local• picks — editorial voice

One of Columbus's most consistent independent cafés. The sourcing is serious, the space is genuinely welcoming, and it's been anchoring this block since before Short North was cool. — local• team on Coffee Shop 01

Market

Independent businesses are everywhere. Their discovery app isn't.

There are approximately 33 million small businesses in the United States, the majority independently owned. Columbus alone has thousands. None of the major discovery platforms were built with independents as the focus — local• is the first to make that the entire premise.
